HISTORY

The Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church was founded in Sardis, Mississippi, in 1870—four years after the town of Sardis was established.

Twenty-one years later, in 1891, five brave and God-fearing men initiated the purchase of ¼ of an acre for the sum of $75.00 for the purpose of erecting a building where leaders would rise up in the community of Sardis; where love is the prevailing factor and God is praised and glorified; a place where one could certainly feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and, without a shadow of doubt, be revived, refreshed, and rejuvenated.

The first trustee board was selected, and those five men who were instrumental in the purchase of the ¼ acre were:

Luke Jones
Andrew Hightower
Alex Hightower
Alex Webb
George Jones

In 1922, the brick building which we now occupy was erected. It was a happy day in the community of Sardis. Many members and friends witnessed the unforgettable service. The pastor, deacons, choir, members, and friends assembled outside in the open air and enjoyed the celebration, which lasted all day. Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church continues to stand as a present beacon in the community.
